AAA look forward to 2021

Yep, I can’t believe it’s nearly 2021 either. That being said, 2020 feels like a year entirely condensed into 6 months of bizarreness and lockdown. With a Covid vaccine in the works to get us all out of the tiers of confinement, there might be some new video game events in 2021 to look forward to but given Brexit is gonna slam home in 2021, I’m not too hopeful. I recon most of the games I’m going to be playing in 2021 will be superb indie titles I’ve had my eye on for ages or AAA games from 2020. That backlog isn’t going anywhere! Regardless of the cynicism and sense of doom that comes from living in the UK at the moment, it’s always refreshing to have a look and see what’s going to be the next smash game to play! I know a few are definitely going to be worth stopping everything and sinking days into. Time to see if we can get a whiff of a smell of the game.

Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny – 28th January

I’m still not 100% sure of the release date for this one as there’s a bit of conflicting info on the UK release date (foreshadowing for future UK releases of everything) Every numbered iteration of Disgaea is always worth keeping an eye out for and I’m a big lover of the series. This is the first fully 3D Disgaea so we’ll have to wait and see if this is works for the franchise or simply makes us pine for the gorgeous sprite work of past titles. Regardless, I’m very hype for this one dood!

The Medium – 28th January

I’m still surprised this is coming to Xbox1/PS4 as well as SeriesX/PS5 systems. I’ve had this queued up on Game Pass on my Xbox1X since it first appeared and I think there’s a lot of potential here for a stellar experience. Will it be a thriller with a spice of horror to keep things interesting or will it be so horrific that it becomes another unplayable Amnesia? We’ll find out soon enough!

Persona 5 Strikers – 23rd February

I love Museo/Dynasty Warrior spin off games. Every title has a different take on the genre and adds something new to the playstyle. Each new game adds incredible music and elements from the IP resulting in more artwork and glorious soundtracks. I’m not entirely sure I’ll finish Persona 5 before Strikers but it’s likely that I’ll be having a blast regardless. Besides, I’ve seen enough of the anime to get the jist and I’ll be taking heart when this launches.

Ghosts ‘n Goblins: Resurrection – 25th February

Who doesn’t love Ghosts ‘n Goblins? I still pop on the Switch to play Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts from time to time. This looks to be closer to a new game like the PSP Ultimate Ghosts ‘n Goblins than a remaster of the original title. It’ll be a nice warm up to Spelunky 1 & 2 when that gets ported to Switch as well. I can already see the “Dark Souls of 2D roguelike” takes now though.

Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town – 23rd March

Although Harvest Moon: One World is out on the 5th March I feel like a lot of people (my partner included) will most likely be waiting for the next Story Of Seasons. If you’re getting both you can farm your life all year long! Both games look to be interesting 3D farming games so it’ll be battle of the barns in March! It’ll be interesting if either title manages to draw away Animal Crossing players now that it has been an entire year of Island farming.

It Takes Two – 26th March

Even though me and my partner have yet to finish the fantastic ‘A Way Out’, I cannot wait to play It Takes Two. The style and humour looked incredibly refreshing. A simple action platformer but a coop focus from the ground up? Count us in! I still remember the trailer as one of the stand out special moments of The Game Awards.

Disco Elysium: The Final Cut – March

Hell yes! I’ve seen this game talked about all of this year and last. The only reason I’ve not snapped it up on PC yet is that I find it a lot easier to play deeply engrossing text based RPGs on the Switch or PS4. The announcement of voice work throughout and tweaks to make it more console friendly sound amazing. Very much looking forward to this one once I figure out what I’ll be playing it on.

Guilty Gear Strive – 9th April

CAN YOU SMELL THE GAME?! The Beta was so much fun (check out the write up here) that despite having to get up at 3am to play it, I was hooked. It’s a massive shame the fancy limited edition is only for the PS5 but thankfully there is cross play between the consoles (in the same way GGXrd was on PS3/PS4) The recent testing of rollback netcode with Guilty Gear XX Accent Core +R has been a blast and it’s just making Strive sound better and better.

And More…

There are plenty more games coming to 2021 with less firm dates so here we go with a quick run down of more to look forward to!

Evil Genius 2: World Domination – Sequel to an absolute PC gem and BRIAN BLESSED!
Oddworld: Soulstorm – More Oddworld!
Overwatch 2 – Yep, I forgot this was still a thing to! Looking forward to the cgi trailers for it.
Roller Champions – I mean, it’s Ubisoft but the beta was great fun.
NEO: The World Ends with You – TWEWY is one of the greatest JRPGs ever made. We’ll see if this can hold up to it.
Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis – Oh yes. PSO3 in everyway that matters.
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 – Hopefully this won’t be like Cyberpunk 2077.
Ys IX: Monstrum Nox – Possibly the most interesting looking Ys game yet!
Hitman 3 – Hitman 2 was stunning and unique so here’s to 3!
Bravely Default 2 – Although never having a chance to play BD1 this looks to be an epic.
Humankind – A potential Civilisation rival!
Poison Control – Good luck googling this! Definitely worth keeping an eye on.
Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX – The Alex The Kidd strikes again.
Cris Tales – Highly recommend you give this a look, the trailers look amazing.
The Good Life – Backed it on day one, very much looking forward to playing it!
Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139… – I need this new soundtrack. NEED.
Deathloop – Looking forward to seeing how the mechanics of this play out.
Back 4 Blood – Left 4 Dead 3 sounds amazing from the alpha reviews!
